Gearing Up for Summer

Gearing Up for Summer

Hi.

Pedro and I are so excited that summer is here. I know what you are thinking: “You two live in South Florida. EVERY day is summer”. To a degree, you are correct but there is more.

In the summer months, our routine changes. We work out a bit earlier, and we make sure to get to the beach for at least an hour or two on the weekends. To say the least, we really take advantage of our surroundings.

Recently, I became a CERT member. Basically, I took a course with other concerned residents where I live to assist in the case of a disaster. We learned how to put out fires, how to set up a triage unit, how to evaluate disaster scenes, and other potentially useful skills.

I know what you are thinking, yet again: “Shereen? What in the world do the two above mentioned topics have to do with each other”? (I must say, it seems I am a bit scatter-brained but I assure you there is a method to my madness once again.)

With summer in Florida comes Hurricane season is Florida. After taking my course, I feel confident that I will be able to make wise decisions about evacuation situations, as well as aid others. Community strength is something I feel very strongly about, and if I can help my neighbors in any way, I am proud to do so. (See? I tied the two topics together!)

What are you doing this summer to enrich your life, or the lives of others around you? I encourage all of you to reach out to your communities and see where you may be of some use. For Florida residents, especially those of us on a barrier island, we need to be very mindful and prepared.

I feel that with our continued education and community spirit, Pedro and I are prepared not only to deal with the positive impacts of summer, but also the potential dangers.

Stay safe and have a great summer!
