Saturday Motivation

What motivates you to stay on track? Today, I’ll share a recent experience that I had:

I was grocery shopping last week in my favorite store, when I came upon a person using one of those electric shopping carts. She was, I would say, a woman in her mid 70s. She was well-dressed, and her hair and make-up were impeccable. She was also about 400 pounds, give or take. The woman was struggling to get a can off a high shelf. I watched as many people passed right by her. Of course, I immediately went over and helped her retrieve the item.

The woman thanked me for my kindness and remarked that if she looked like me, she would be able to shop like any other “normal” person. I was at a loss for words (an occurrence that SELDOM happens). When I collected myself, I asked her what she meant, she explained how she was once active and fit. When her daughter died 20 years ago, she simply gave up on herself. I offered her words of encouragement. asked if she needed more help (which she denied) and walked away.

I thought of that woman while I was checking out at the store and decided that instead of taking my community shuttle bus home, I would walk. In fact, I walked up my stairs to my apartment. I kept thinking that that woman could easily be any of us, and how could I avoid her situation? After all as we grow older, more and more unpleasant things are bound to happen to us or the people whom we love. The answer was simple for me: Keep moving and NEVER give up on myself.

Thank you, whomever you are, for keeping me in check and motivating me. I am grateful to have met you!

What motivated you this week?

Have a Healthy Day,

Shereen Rios BAS, CPT
